I'm Mike, but you've probably already figured that out (see the domain name). I'm an all around geek, mainly interested in Systems Administration. I mostly work with GNU/Linux systems, and to a slightly lesser extent the BSDs. I'm always toying around with apache, php and MySQL (i.e. LAMP/BAMP systems), and various opensource projects. I haven't really contributed to any opensourceprojects other than providing basic support on irc. I can sometimes be found lurking the gentoo and freebsd channels on freenode, but I'm usually bouncing around to whatever I find interesting at the moment. I'm not trying to say I'm some huge contributor or anything, but if something comes up that I can help with, I'll chime in if no one else does. I do toy around lightly with some basic programming. I don't mean the language, I mean I don't do any serious programming ; ) I've had some intro classes on C and C++ and Basic, and I hate to admit it but I've taken a class on VisualBasic. I've also had some classes in a handful of other useless languages, but those were mostly meant to teach programming structure and have no real practical use (i.e. PASCAL, COBAL). Lately I've been toying around with PHP and Python a bit, but I haven't really done much with those languages. Light programming knowlegde mainly helps when you've installed some OSS package that needs some additional tweaking to get going. That, or a trip the project's forums : ) On the professional side, you'll usually find me doing Tech Support or Systems work for smaller companies. I tend to enjoy the more personal feel of small business over the mindnumbing environments of large corporations. The people are usually more my type in small business, if you don't count my last job. I suppose I could also say I do light contract work for various contacts and neighborhood folk, but that basically comes down to hand-holding the computer ignorant populace, and helping them with remedial troubleshooting/implementation tasks. I also have a handful of other hobbies, like gaming (as in video), photography, and playing the guitar...not that I'm particularly good at any of them, I just enjoy doing them. When I feel like braving the outdoors, I'll hop on my bike and peddle around. Sometimes I'll flick on the TV and watch something like History Channel or Discovery, and not useless crap that polutes the airwaves and the mind. That is, unless football is on. Or should I say, unless the Bears are on. |
